Ulverstone Judo Club Inc (UJC Inc) is the member club responsible for the development of the International Judo Centre; the club has a long and proud history dating back to the 1950's. The UJC Inc. is a member of the Judo Federation of Tas. Inc. which is a member of the International Judo Federation. This affiliation allows all members the opportunity to represent at state, national and international level. This includes Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Oceania, Australian and NSW Championships. Grades achieved by members are recognized throughout Australia and the world, including the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, Japan.
Why do Judo? Judo is not only a fantastic and dynamic sport. Judo is not only a highly effective method of self defence. It is also one of the best ways to get fit. Our members are diverse and range from the recreational Judoka to state and national level competitors. Our coaching staff range from former national champions, World, National and Oceania representatives, as well as current state and national level competitors.
What can you expect?
Our Judo classes are divided into kids (5 - 15 years) and adult classes. These classes run for about 60minutes for kids and 90 minutes for adults. The kids classes run from 5:pm - 5:40pm - 5: 45pm – 7.0pm Tuesdays while the adult classes run from 6:30pm to 8:00pm Wednesday and Thursay. It should be noted that some kids (around the 14 to 16 year age group) can (and do) attend senior classes.
While training you will learn throwing techniques as well as a ground techniques which includes a full range of grappling from hold downs to arm locks and strangles. For safety reasons, kids are not taught the arm locks and strangles until they are 14 years old.
